Autism in Children
Autism is a neuro-developmental disorder that begins at birth or within the first two years of life. Concerns usually begin with a notable deficit in speech and language, reduced eye contact, and play skills. In young children, it is common to hear complaints that the toddler or the 4-year-old won’t respond to their name when called. They often have limited social interaction, and peculiar movements, such as

rocking, flapping hands, and in some cases, self-injurious behaviors. It is critical that timely evaluation and intervention is undertaken as the earlier the intervention, the better the outcomes. The prognosis or course of development varies greatly, but it is prudent to employ all resources from speech therapy to Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA), when applicable.

At Comprehend the Mind, we are often sought out by parents and providers for a definitive diagnosis or clarity when Autism is suspected. Our clinical team works together to assess, confer, and diagnose, to write an actionable treatment plan. We work with schools, providers, and parents to gather information to understand the child, the school and family dynamic, and curate a multi-level plan to address the whole child. We re-evaluate every 18 months to assess response to intervention (RTI) and adjust the diagnoses and treatment accordingly. This has been shown to be the most effective way to understand the evolving challenges children with Autism experience, and to proactively address them.
Autism in Adolescents and Adults

In adolescents, we often see teachers making a referral due to poor peer interactions, such as being isolated or rejected by peers. Other start to notice difficulties with social cues, such as understanding sarcasm or humor, in the presence of adequate intelligence. Previously considered to be good students, these teenagers may begin to show deficits in critical thinking and comprehension. These social-emotional deficits start to become apparent in all areas.
Autism in Adults is even trickier to diagnose without a carefully designed evaluation. In adults, some ASD symptoms can overlap with symptoms of mental disorders such as an anxiety or mood disorder or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We often see individuals who are gifted and appear as high functioning Autism, although they can be both.
